CRANIAL DEFORMITIES:
ETIOLOGY AND INTERVENTIONS
Cranial deformities may arise from craniosynostosis, characterized by the premature closure of sutures, or from positional deformity. A medical diagnosis is essential for identifying the appropriate treatment.
If the deformity is positional and continues beyond 3–4 months, repositioning, tummy time, and early intervention are advised. Between 4–6 months, an orthotic helmet may facilitate skull remodeling.
In instances of craniosynostosis, the treatment involves surgery, succeeded by the application of an orthopedic helmet to facilitate growth.
DIAGNOSIS OF CRANIAL DEFORMITIES
The diagnosis must be conducted by a specialist physician through the assessment of the infant.
Parents frequently observe irregularities in the shape of their child’s head and pursue medical consultation. The Argenta scale serves as a useful tool for a rapid preliminary visual evaluation.
